What is laminating?
Sandwiching a document between two layers of another material, usually plastic.
How does laminating work?
The plastic sheets are heated, which forces them onto the document and then a seal is created. The plastic seals, and the document is now laminated.
Define embossing:
Creating a slightly raised impression on a surface
What is the main purpose of varnishing?
To provide protection against scuffs and scratches
What are two types of varnishing?
- Spirit Varnishing makes the material more shiny and hard-wearing
- UV Lacquer makes the material REALLY shiny
What do you get if you laminate paper or card?
A composite material
Why are composite materials better than standard materials?
They have properties from both materials they are made from, so are better suited to their function
Why are paper cups coated with polythene?
To make them stronger and waterproof
