Finished Of Wood Flashcards
Painting
Seals the wood but usually disguises grain- more even and unnatural.
Brushing, Rolling or spraying.
Varnishing
Hard transparent. Internal and external use.
Makes wood water resistant. Protection from Rot.
Brush or spray.
Staining
normally to alter the color of the wood, making lighter woods to appear darker in color. Does not protect the wood from decay. Varnish can be applied after to protect.
Brush or rubbing
Color Washing
Similar to staining but uses paint instead of stain. Provides color of paint but allows grain to be visible.
waxing
Rubbing onto wood. Does not penetrate the wood but sits on the surface. Enhanced aesthetics of wood but no protection (apart from oxidisation)
Oiling
No protection but adds depth to the grain, making it more prominent. Rubbed onto surface and penetrates the pores.
Tanalising
Treating the wood with preservatives (copper sulphate and other salts) under pressure.
Water removed, chamber filled with preservatives, sawn and planed timber into vessel, left under pressure, timber steam dried. Main advantage is it can be done to uncut timber before manufacture of finished product. Lasts 50 years.
Polymer Lamination
A layer of polymer can be applied to the wood to provide a waterproof, hard and tough surface to it. Aesthetics can also be added such as grain.
