Q

What does “arithmetic” mean?

A

Arithmetic means linear. An arithmetic sequence is when the terms are equally distanced. For example: 2, 4, 6, 8… is an arithmetic sequence because all terms in the sequence are 2 apart.

Q

Find the Nth term of this sequence: 5, 7, 9, 11, 13…

A

To find the Nth term, we must find out what the common distance is. This means that we must see how much terms are increasing or decreasing by each time. In this case it is increasing by 2. The first term of a sequence is term 1, in this case 5, so we must find the value of term 0, in this case 3. We take the common difference and say it is 2n then add term 0 which makes the Nth term 2n+3.
