FINALS - UNIT III Flashcards
Chemical substances that are meant to kill pests.
Pesticides
In what year was DDT Discovered?
1939
What does DDT stand for?
Dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane
What are the groups of pesticides based on the types of pests they kill?
- Insecticide
- Herbicide
- Rodenticide
- Bactericides
- Fungicides
- Larvicides
Based on their biogdegradability, pesticides can be also grouped into:
- Biodegradable
- Persistent
Theses kinds of pesticides can be broken down by microbes and other living beings into harmless compounds
Biodegradable Pesticides
These are pesticides that may take months or years to break down.
Persistent Pesticides
Enumerate the Chemically-related pesticides
- Organophosphates
- Carbamates
- Organochlorine Insecticides
- Pyrethroid
- Herbicide
- Biopesticides
Most pesticides of this type are mostly insecticides, to which they affect the nervous system by disrupting the enzyme that act as a neurotransmitter.
Organophosphates
These are similar to organophosphates, however the enzyme effects are reversible.
Carbamates
These pesticides were used in previous years, but later removed by many countries due to their environmental and health effects.
Organochlorine Insecticides
These pesticides are synthetic versions of a naturally occuring pesticide found in chrysanthemums.
Pyrethoids
A type of pesticide that kills or inhibits the growth of unwanted plants.
Herbicide
These pesticides are derived from natural materials such as; animals, plants, bacteria, and certain minerals.
Biopesticides
What are the 3 categories of biopesticides?
- Biochemical
- Microbials
- Plant-incorporated protectants
