Finals Semester 1 Flashcards
Filtration
is a way to separate out pure substances in a mixture comprised of particles, some of which are large enough to be stopped by porous material.
Distillation
is a way of separating a mixture comprised of 2 or more liquids.
Evaporation
is a way to separate mixtures where there are one or more dissolved solids.
What would you do to separate sand from water
I would either use filteration or just boil off the water
Law of conservation of mass
During a chemical reaction the mass the total mass of the product must equal the total mass of the reactants.
Parts of daltons theory
- All matter is composed of tiny particles called atoms,
- Atoms of the same element are identical in terms of size, mass, and other properties.
- Atoms of different elements can chemically combine with one another to form chemical compounds
- Chemical reactions can be described as the separation, combination, or rearrangement of atoms.
Dalton Thompson, Rutherford
Law of definite proportions
which states that a given chemical compound always contains the same elements in the exact same proportions by mass
What did dalton do
formulated an atomic theory based on the law of conservation of mass, the law of definite proportions, and the law of multiple proportions.
What did Thompson do
He used the code ray tube to discover electrons and that they have a negative charge.
What did Rutherford do
He used the gold foil Experiment to discover the nucleus
Elements of the same group have
Similar properties
Naming prefixes for molecular compounds
1-mono 2-di 3-tri 4-tetra 5-pent 6-hexa 7-hepta 8-octa 9-nona 10-deca
Naming binary acids steps
Step 1: write hydro-
Step 2: use the root of the anions name with an ic ending.
Step 2.5: write acid. Don’t worry about little numbers.
Step3 stop writing.
Naming oxy acids
has oxygen in them. Step 1. Don't write hydro. Step 2. Use the root of the anion with these endings. Ate.➡️Ic Ite.➡️Ous Step 2.7 write acid Step 3 don't write anymore
Mole to mole steps
- Balance the equation
- Put the variable and given mass in moles over the coefficient
