Ceilings and Floors
What are the 4 types of flooring?
Hard flooring materials, wood & bamboo flooring, resilient flooring, carpet
Types of hard flooring?
concrete, stone, brick and brick pavers, ceramic tiles, quarry tiles, terrazo
3 types of wood and bamboo flooring?
Solid wood, Laminated wood, engineered wood
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a hard flooring system?
They are durable and resist moisture and foot traffic. However, they are not the best for ergonomics
What are some details about concrete flooring?
They have a low initial cost, durable and color can be added.
There is one caveat, which is that they require expert workmanship
What are 4 types of stone?
Marble, Granite, Slate, Sandstone
What are some facts about stone installation and maintenance?
They come in different colors/textures, the installation requires bed setting, grouted joints and a sealer coating.
Periodic Maintenance is required to upkeep these types of floors.
How are brick and brick pavers laid?
Generally they are laid on face with a setting bed and decorative joints and different paver patterns
Quarry tile? (McDonalds Tile)
Fired clay tiles with several different shapes and sizes.
How is tile installed?
The subfloor, then a layer of adhesive, then the backer floor , followed by another thin layer of adhesive, then the flooring material with grout and depending on the type of flooring a coating.
Ceramic Tile (Lee Bathroom)
Fired clay like quarry tile, but they often come in a glazed finish and are used on floors and walls . Optional: Colored joints
Glass Tile
They can come in many different colors and sizes and are usually seen on backsplashes and in mosaic/decorative window (glazing) pieces.
Terrazzo Flooring (School Hallway flooring)
Ground/Polished concrete with granite or marble chips to add to colored cement.
They have divider strips for color/shape changes as well as for expansion and contraction
What are the types of wood flooring connections and materials that they are made from?
Cherry, Oak, Pine, etc
Blind Nailed flooring, square edge flooring, pre-finished or finished in place flooring
Laminated Wood Flooring?
Usually made with particle board or soft wood fiber, comes in planks and are nailed down or glued and are low quality and can’t be refinished
