Final Unit II Flashcards
Class 38 (29 cards)
What are the three types of partition framing?
Wood, Metal and Masonry
Wood Framing is somewhat restricting but a good overall product. Why?
Because it has limited use with building codes and using fire treated wood can be expensive.
What are metal framing units generally composed of?
Cold- metal formed studs that are found in most UL assemblies
Masonry framing is comprised of what ?
Wood or metal furring strips
Plaster is a generic term for what?
A cement based substance
How is plaster applied?
Directly to a solid surface or a group of bases called a lathe.
What are the different types of plaster?
Gypsum, Lime and Portland Cement (Stucco)
3 materials that lathe is usually made of?
Metal, Gypsum and Veneer with wood veneer being the most common in the past
What is lathe usually made of today?
Expanded metal, preformed gypsum
How is expanded metal lathe made?
Thin sheets of galvanized steel that are slit and stretched to produce a mesh.
Benefits of Gypsum based plaster?
Workable, Inexpensive and good Sound and fire resistance
Two categories of plaster?
Base-coat and finish coat
How workable is stucco and how many coats is it applied ?
Less workable than gypsum plaster, shrinks and needs control joints, and is applied in 3 coats over metal lathe or 2 coats over concrete or masonry
Why is gypsum board the most commonly used interior system?
Because it is easier to install than most, most inexpensive and comes in convenient sizes.
What are the uses of gypsum board?
Wallboard, Plasterboard and Drywall.
What are the Types of Gypsum Board?
Regular, Water-Resistant, Type X, Foil-Backed, Coreboard, High-Impact and Mold Resistant.
How is Gypsum Board Installed?
-Install partition framing
MEP Rough in
-Hang the drywall
-Finish gypsum drywall joints, edges and corners
What is the finishing process for gypsum board?
Corner beads, metal trim
tap & bed w/ 1st coat and tape
2nd coat
finish w/3rd and final coat w/ sanding
What are the levels of finish for Drywall?
Level 0-5
Level 1 finish means ?
The joints have been taped
Level 2 finish means?
Joints taped, tape & fasteners are covered with a compound
Level 3 Finish requires what?
A second coat of compound to be applied
What is a level 4 drywall finish?
There is a 3 coat system of compound on the wall.
What is a level 5 finish?
3 coat+ thin finish applied to the entire surface. The skim coat is applied
