Final-Trophic Structure Flashcards

1
Q

Where are the major ocean fisheries found and why?

A

The great fisheries of the world are located close to coasts, over continental shelves, at high latitudes, and along the equator . Fish are common in these areas because food is plentiful. In all these areas, nutrients support large blooms of phytoplankton.

Q

What is trophic transfer? How efficient is the trophic pyramid? What are some examples of how we fish?

A

Energy transferred from one step in the food chain to the next

Mid-Water Trawl Net-large nets trawled in midwater
Processing Ship Factory ship that can freeze and can fish, allows for more efficient fishing
Purse Seine Net that corrals fish

Q

What is the logistic growth curve

(or the logistic growth equation)? What has happened to North Atlantic commercial fisheries over the 1900s and 2000s?

A

Logistic Growth Curve Population growth vs time

North Atlantic Fisheries Dramatic decline in fish, commercial extinction

Q

What are some

of the considerations involved in commercial fisheries management?

A

Monitoring Global Fishing Global fishing watch used to track ships

Fishing down the food web All top species are not viable to fish, so we fish lower on the food chain
