Final Review Flashcards
What is an experiment
A procedure that tests the hypothesis by the process of collecting information under controlled conditions
What is an hypothesis
A scientific explanation for a set of observations that can be tested
What is data
Information gathered from observations
What is a conclusion
Rest date the hypothesis and whether or not your hypothesis was supported by the data
What is peer review and why is it important
Allows experiments to be examined for mistakes and is when the experiment is verified by other scientists
What is a theory
Implies that something has been proven or accepted by multiple scientific experiments and it is accepted that it is true
Explain the cumulative nature of science
Science is always changing
Units of measurements
Meter length
Gram mass
Liter volume
What is homeostasis and how is it maintained of body temperature
Process of maintaining a stable internal environment necessary to survive and is maintained by stimuli
What is metabolism
Combination of chemical reactions an organism needs to carry out its life process
Difference between ionic and covalent bonds
Ionic bonds are one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another and covalent bonds are when electrons are shared between atoms
What are the most common elements found in organic compounds
Carbon
Hydrogen
Nitrogen
Oxygen
What are organic compounds
A substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements held together by chemical bonds
What are hydrogen bonds
Water molecules are attracted to each other forming bonds between the oxygen of one water molecule and hydrogen of another water molecule
Three important things of carbon that make it versatile
Has 4 bonding sites
Can bond to any element
Can bond with carbon to form chains
