Chtomosomal Mutations Flashcards
What are the two types of mutations that can occur in gamete cells
Gene mutations - affect only one gene ( point and frameshift)
Chromosomal mutation- affect the number or structure of chromosomes and involves many genes
What is a mutation
Changes in the genetic material
What is a deletion mutation
Involves the loss of part of a chromosome
What is a duplication mutation
Involves the production of extra copies of parts of the chromosome
What is a inversion mutation
Reverses the direction of parts of a chromosome
What is a translocation mutation
When one part of a chromosome breaks off and attaches to another chromosome
What is a non disjunction mutation
Means not coming apart
When homologous chromosomes fail to separate properly during meiosis
Results in abnormal numbers of chromosomes
What does trisomy mean
Has an extra copy of a chromosome
What is monosomy
A person is missing a copy of a chromosome
