Richard Dawkins
A well-known atheist, argues that atheists are oppressed in many societies because they are forced to accept or endure ideas that they disagree with.
Religion
A system of meaning for interpreting the world. It is a unified system of beliefs with a supernatural referent.
Cults
Subcultures to dominate religions. Cults often focus on the leader and die with the leader. In other words, they tend to be quite short-term.
Effects of religion
Suggests our existence has a greater meaning.
Humanist Perspectives
Human centered, and often science-based. States that “like has no meaning, we have to give it meaning.
Professor Reginald Bibby
Argues that despite Alberta having a low amount of people who have religious affiliation, Albertans and Canadians in general, are still trying to figure life out. He adds that traditional religion does not seem to connect some people with the spirituality they need.
Marx, belief of religion.
1) Religion/God is a human creation.

1) Weber wrote the Protestant Ethic, and the Spirit of Capitalism.
2) We should examine religion in terms of how it affects the ways in which we behave.

What did Weber believe in terms of religion?
He did not care if there was a god, but believed that it was the fact that people believed in a god that mattered; it is the belief that affects society.

Weber stated that capitalism was the result of the protestant ethic.
What are the four dimensions of religion that Bibby stated we should consider to assess religion’s impact upon us?
1) Belief (in God)
2) Practice (i.e. Prayer)

4) Knowledge (knowledge of the Bible etc.)

According to Bibby, we should assess religion in terms of:
