Who were some of the pioneers of filmmaking in the late 19th century?
The Lumiere Brothers (Louis and Auguste Lumiere). Unveiled their invention, the cinematographe, in Paris in 1895.
What were studios like during Hollywood’s Golden Age?
Actors were on contract.
Sound came along.
Centralized process that was organized around big studios that producers owned everything.
What lead to the studios’ decline?
Actors were fed up..
Actors would break talent contracts (1943).
Paramount Decree (1948).
Rise of Television.
What made the New Hollywood of the 1960s and 70s different?
Directors become much more important.
Tended to go shoot on location.
Pushing the boundaries (nude, drugs, sex).
Blockbuster and the end of New Hollywood. (Jaws, Star-Wars)
