FINAL - Editing (VI) Flashcards
What are the responsibilities of an editor on a film production?
- what shots to use and HOW to use them
- spatial/temporal relationships between shots
- overall “rhythm” of film
What are some foundational editing techniques?
ellipsis, flashback, flash-forward, master shot, coverage, parallel, cross-cutting, transitions, continuity and discontinuity editing.
How does an editor shape the rhythm of a film?
decides on duration of each shot
What are some basic cuts and transitions that editors use?
- cross-cutting: cutting together two or more lines of action that occurs simultaneously at different locations.
- Master shot technique
- Parallel editing
- Fade in
- Fade out
- Dissolve
- Freeze frame
What is continuity editing and how is it achieved?
“invisible editing”; what happens on screen makes as much narrative sense as possible.
keeping track of chronological order of events
What is discontinuity editing?
breaks the rules of continuity editing by seeking transitions that aren’t smooth/coherent. (Jump cuts)
What is the Master Scene Technique and how does it relate to the 180 degree rule?
same scene is taken with different coverage of different angles and medium-shots of different subjects; has one “master shot” that shows all subjects in the shot.
What is the 180 degree rule?
camera cannot cross a 180 degree pane of view.
What is the Kuleshov Effect?
two shots put together side-by-side will impose meaning from them.
