What constitutes a formal analysis of film?
Breaking it a part and knowing how they all work.
Form and Content work together.
Form:
means by which the subject is expressed and experience (how it is presented)
Content:
the subject of an artwork (what it is about)
What is cinematic language and when do we mean by cultural invisibility?
(INVISIBLE) The accepted systems, methods, or conventions by which the movies communicate with the viewer.
cultural invisibility: employed by the filmmaker to reinforce the casual viewer’s subconscious beliefs or worldview.
What is the relationship between movies and culture?
while American movies certainly influence the mass culture that consumes them, they are also an integral part of that culture, a product of it, and therefore a reflection of prevailing concerns, attitudes, and beliefs
What do we mean by implicit versus explicit meaning?
implicit = NOT OBVIOUS; lies below the surface of the movie’s story and presentation.
explicit = OBVIOUS; available on the surface of the movie.
Invisible techniques?
- low angle shot
- cutting on action
Basic construction of movie?
Shot: an unbroken span of action captured by an uninterrupted run of a motion-picture camera.
Editing: the joining together of discrete shots.
Fundamentals of film form:
Light, Lighting, Phi phenomenon, Persistence of vision, Critical flicker fusion
Light:
a source of illumination
Lighting:
crafted interplay of light and shadow to create a mood, reveal character, and convey meaning.
Phi phenomenon:
illusion of movement created by events that succeed each other rapidly.
Persistence of vision:
(the blur.) the process by which the brain retains an image for a fraction of a second longer than the eye records it.
