Final Exam Review Section 1 Flashcards
Density Formula
Mass (g) / Volume (ml or cm^3)
Pure Substances
-Have a unique set of physical properties.
-Cannot be separated into two or more different species by any physical technique
Elements
Substances which cannot be subdivided by chemical or physical process
Compounds
Groups of 2 or more different atoms joined by chemical bonding
Molecules
Two or more atoms (same or different) joined together chemically
Mixtures
Consist of two or more pure substances that can be separated by physical techniques
Heterogenous Mixture
A mixture in which the components of a mixture are unevenly distributed
Homogenous Mixture
A mixture in which the components of a mixture are evenly distributed
-Often called solutions
Physical Properties
Properties that can be observed and measured without changing the composition of the substance
Includes:
-Color
-State of Matter
-Melting & Boiling point
-density
-solubility
-conductivity
-malleability & ductility
-Viscosity
Intensive Properties
Bulk property; Physical property does not depend on the size or amount of the sample
-Density, Odor, color, luster, malleability, ductility, conductivity, hardness, melting & Boiling point
Extensive Properties
Physical property that changes with the size of the sample measured
-Mass, Volume, Length, Total charge
Chemical properties
Properties that change the composition of the substance through chemical reactions
