The Ninevites repented, and God forgave them. This angered Jonah because he didn’t think they deserved forgiveness, and he went outside to sulk, so God made a plant grow to give Jonah shade. But then, God made a worm eat the plant and made the sun very hot. In his discomfort and sadness that the plant withered, Jonah became angry and wanted to die. God used this to teach Jonah that if he cared about the plant, God should care about the Ninevites.
