Definition of Ethic of Care:
Requires us to focus more on basic moral skills. (Kindness, sensitivity, attentiveness, tact, patience, reliability.)
Definition of ethics:
The science of rightness & wrongness of human contact by natural reason.
Definition of fidelity:
Loyalty and faithfulness to others.
Definition of consequentialism:
Evaluates the rightness or wrongness of ethical decisions by assessing the consequences of these decisions on the patient.
Definition of beneficence
Active promotion of good, kindness and charity.
Definition of autonomy
Person’s self contained ability to decide
Definition of veracity
Obligation to tell the truth and avoid deception.
Definition of Nonmaleficence
Ethical principle that places high value on avoiding harm to others.
Definition of Tort
Wrong or injury for which court provides remedy in the form of an action for damages.

Willful attempt or threat to inflict injury on person.
Definition of battery
Any unlawful touching of another that is without justification or excuse.
Definition of false imprisonment
Conscious restraint of the freedom of person without proper authorization.
Definition of negligence
Failure to do something that a reasonable person guided by ordinary consideration would do or the doing of something a reasonable person would not.
Definition of Res Ipsa Loquitor
“The thing speaks for itself.” A patient is injured through no fault of his or her own while in complete control of another.
Respondeat superior
“The master speaks for the servant.” The physician or facility is reasonable for the negligent acts of its employees.
Standard of Care
The degree of skill, knowledge and care ordinarily possessed and employed by members in good standing within the profession.
DRG
Diagnosed-Related Groups. System that categorizes patients into payment groups.
PPS
Prospective Payment System. System for patients where a predetermined level of reimbursement is established before the services are provided.
RHIT
Registered Health Information Technician. Professionals who are technical experts in health data collection, analysis, monitoring, maintenance, and reporting activities in accordance with established data-quality principles, legal and regulatory standards, and professional best practice guidelines.
ICD
International Classification of Diseases. Diagnoses are coded into a numbering system.
CPT
Current Procedural Terminology. Assigns a number to individual procedures.
Quality Management.
Monitors and evaluates quality of care and services provided to patient within health care facility.
Informed consent
Patient has been informed of procedure, operation, risks involved and possible consequences. Required when pt is subjected to any kind of invasive procedure.
Implied consent
Occurs (in emergency situation) when it is not possible to obtain informed consent from patient, their parents or a legal representative.
Authorization for treatment
Allowing procedures to be done. Only one who can authorize is a physician.
Correct way to amend a record.
Draw a single line through error. Write “error.” Record correct information. Date and initial entry. Patient has a right to amend a record.
How drugs are classified:
Name, action, legal.
Generic name:
term used for a commercially available drug. (ibuprofen)
Brand name:
given to drug manufactured by specific company. (Advil)
Chemical name:
actual chemical structure of drug. (7-chloro-1, 3dihydro1-methyl)
Classification by action:
Classified according to the action or function they perform. (Drugs that relieve pain are called analgesics.)
Legal classification:
Drugs are classified legally as either prescription or non-prescription.
Prescription drugs
require an order by a legally authorized health practitioner. Dispensed by a pharmacist.
Non-prescription drugs
can be obtained legally without a prescription.
Vial
Small glass bottle with sealed rubber cap, manufactured in different sizes, may contain multiple does of drug.
Ampule
Sealed glass container designed to hold a single dose of a drug. Intended for one use only.
Needle gauge
thickness or diameter of needle.
18 gauge needles
drawing solutions from vials, bottles, etc.
20-22 gauge needles
injecting intravenously
25 gauge needles
subcutaneous injections (TB testing)
The larger the gauge:
the smaller the diameter. Usually colors will determine the various sizes.
Bolus injection
or IV push is a rapid injection of a quantity of solution. Used in contrast material.
Analgesic
drugs that relieve pain without causing a loss of consciousness. (Morphine)
Anesthetic
Agents that reversibly depress neuronal function, producing loss of ability to perceive pain and/or other sensations. (Diprivan)
Antibiotic
drugs used to kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms. (Ciprofloxacin)
Heparin
Patients undergoing interventional procedures in the radiology department are often receiving these anticoagulant drugs and should be monitored closely to prevent massive hemorrhage, which can occur with overdose.
Antihistamines
drugs used primarily to treat allergic disorders, both acute and chronic. Also used to treat symptoms of upper respiratory infections and the common cold which are viral infections.
Parenteral
administered by injection or by a route other than the GI tract. Three most common routes are intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous.

Abbreviation for “with.”
