- 5-10% term and expected regain in 10-14 days
- 10-15% in pre-term, expected regain in 15 days
Explanation for initial weight loss?
Due to the elimination of the meconium, first stool and water loss
When does regain normally begin in the term infant? When should we expect regain of BW?
- Starts to regain around the 4th day
- Back to BW around 10-14 days after birth
How often do breastfeeding babies usually feed?
8 times or more per day
How often do commercial infant formula fed babies usually feed?
6 or more times per day
What does the the feeding schedule depend on?
Age, appetite, temperament and mood, effectiveness at sucking, the speed at which the milk flows and time of day
How do we know if baby is feeding enough?
- Urine, stools and weight
- Baby seems full after drinking
What are the signs that the baby is not drinking enough?
- Very drowsy, difficult to wake for feeding
- Urine is dark or very little (>6 hrs between diapers)
- Orange stain in the urine after first two days
- Stools contain meconium after the 5th day
- Fewer than one BM per 25 hrs between the age of 5 days to 4 weeks
What does the APGAR score consist of?
5 components (Colours, heart rate, reflex irritability, muscle tone and respiration scored on 0, 1 or 2)
When is the Apgar score reported? What score is normal?
- At least 1 minute an 5 minutes after birth in all infants
- Score between 7 and 10 is normal
APGAR Colour 0, 1 and 2?
1: Blue or pale
2: Acrocyanotic
2: Completely pink
APGAR heat rate 0, 1 and 2?
0: Absent
1: <100 bpm
2: >100 bpm
APGAR reflex irritability 0, 1 and 2?
0: No response
1: Grimace
2: Cry or active withdrawal
APGAR muscle tone 0, 1 and2?
0: Limp
1: Some flexion
2: Active motion
