LU Heat Consuming Body Fluids
WEI SYNDROME
Progressive weakness and paralysis of the body and limbs, particulary of the lower limbs. Slight swelling and numbness of the limbs with heat, sensation to touch. General heaviness, sensation of fullness in the chest and epigastric region, loose stool with bad smell or diarrhea, irritability, thirst, painful urination, hot and dark yellowish or turbid urine, or hot feet which are relieved by the cold. Red, puffy maybe purple tongue. Yellow, thick, with greasy or sticky or dry and sticky coating. Soft, slippery, thready and or rapid pulse. Jiao mei er miao san. Qing zao tang. SP9, BL20, ST28, CV3, or CV9.
Damp Heat Affecting the Channels
WEI SYNDROME
Slow onset weakness, and or paralysis of the limbs, muscle atrophy, puffy face with sallow complexion, or emaciation, lassitude, shortness of breath or dislike speaking, reduced appetite, abdominal distension, loose stools without a bad smell, pale, puffy tongue with scallops. Thin white tongue coating. Slow, weak or soft, thready pulse. Shen ling bai zhu san. Bu zhong yi qi tang. BL20, BL21, CV6.
SP and ST Qi Xu
WEI SYNDROME
History of traumatic injury, flaccid paralytic limbs, incontinence or urine and feces if spinal cord is injured. Purple tongue. Thin white coating. Choppy pulse. Tong qiao huo xue tang. Xiao huo luo dan. Huatuo Jiaji, CV3, BL25, BL32.
Qi and Blood Stagnation
WEI SYNDOME
Severe fixed pain aggravated by pressure and movement, obvious swelling. Red or purple skin (ecchymosis), insomnia. Thin and white tongue coating. Wiry and tight pulse. Huo xue zhi tong tang.
Early Stage
SPRAIN + STRAIN
Mild or moderate fixed pain, or soreness and heaviness. Recurrent swelling, limited movement aggravated by cold. Cool and numb skin, pale and puffy complexion, lassitude, chills. Ecchymosis on tongue. White and sticky tongue coating. Thready and choppy pulse. Yang xue shu jin wan.
Later Stage
SPRAIN + STRAIN
Attacks of severe, acute joint pain which is fixed in location and worse on exposure to cold, better with warmth. There may be swelling, but no visible redness or heat, possible deformation and hardening of the joint with restricted movement. White and greasy tongue coating. Slippery, deep and wiry pulse. Dispel wind and eliminate dampness, warm the channels and free the flow of qi. Ji xue fu zi nian tong tang. LI4, SP6.
Wind Cold Damp
GOUT
Severe, acute joint aching and pain which is fixed in location and is accompanied by redness, warm and swelling. Possible fever, thirst, constipation, yellow scanty urine. Red tongue with yellow greasy coating. Slippery rapid or wiry rapid pulse. Clear heat and eliminate dampness, free the flow of the network vessels and stop pain. Ren dong pu gong er miao san. DU14, LI 11, LI 4.
Wind Damp Heat
GOUT
Severe, acute, fixed, stabbing pain as if being cut by a knife. Dark purple tongue or purple spots. Wiry or choppy pulse. Quicken the blood and transform stasis, free the flow of the network vessels to stop pain. Wu ling di long tang. LI 4, SP 6.
Qi Stagnation and Blood Stasis
GOUT
Enduring joint pain which is sometimes mild and sometimes strong, on and off, swelling of the joint, restriction of movement. Dark purple skin in the affect3ed area, stiffness, hardening, and deformation of the joint, tophi under the skin (mainly on the face, ears and joints) which are painless. Dark or purple tongue. Deep, thready, choppy pulse. Transform phlegm and dispel stasis, free the flow of the network vessels to stop pain. Tao hong yin. ST 40, ST 36, RN 12.
Phlegm and Stasis Obstructing Network Vessels
GOUT
Enduring joint pain, low back and knee soreness and limpness, worsening of symptoms after taxation, lack of joint flexibility. Night sweats, dry mouth and throat tinnitus. Red tongue with little coating. Thready rapid pulse. Nourish the liver and kidney yin, strengthen and reinforce the sinews and bones. Liu wui di huang wan. KD 13, KD 17.
Liver and Kidney Yin Xu
GOUT
Distending pain on one side of the neck, oblique head to the diseased side, lower jaw turning to healthy side and limited movement, pain may radiate to upper back and upper limb. May have history of injury, no obvious general symptoms. Thin and white tongue coating. Normal or slightly purple tongue. Wiry pulse. Shen tong zhu yu tang. GV 14, BL 10, GB 20, GB 21, SI 14, Ashi.
Qi and Blood Stagnation
STIFF NECK
Distending pain on one side of the neck, oblique head to the diseased side, lower jaw turning to healthy side and limited movement, pain may radiate to upper back and upper limb. Chills, fever, general aching, heavy sensation of head. Thin and white or white and sticky tongue coating. Normal tongue color. Superficial and tight or superficial and moderate pulse. Ge gen tang. SI 3, SI 7, GB 39, BL 60, LU 7, TB 5, Laozhen.
Invasion of Wind Cold
STIFF NECK
Stiffness and pain in the neck which may extend to the forearm, the hand, and even the fingers, the tips of which may feel numb.Movement of shoulder may be limited. Condition gets worse at night.
Nerve Root Patter
CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS
Discomfort in the neck which is unable to stretch. Pain in the neck and shoulder with heavy, numb limbs. In severe cases, spasmodic paralysis and fecal and urinary incontinence may develop.
