Bi Syndromes Flashcards
Wandering or fixed pain in joints and/or muscles that is aggravated in damp cold weather or places which are. Alleviated by warmth. Very sensitive to weather change. Pain severity changes from time to time. Painful area may have a cold sensation, aversion to wind or swelling, but not red. Joints or muscles may feel weak, but mobility is ok. May have Liver and Kidney xu, qi and blood xu symptoms. Tongue normal with thin/thick, white, sticky coating. Wiry, tight or soggy pulse. Disperse wind and cold, eliminate damp. Yi Yi Ren Tang + Juan Bi Tang. Ashi, GB39, 34. BL11, 23, GV3, 4, CV4, 6.
Wind-Cold-Damp-Bi
Acute onset, wandering or fixed, severe, burning pain in the joints with limited movement. Limitation of movement will be gone once swelling goes down. Joints are red, swollen and warm to touch. Fever not abated by sweating, thirst, restlessness, dark yellow urine. Red tongue tip, thin/thick, yellow, sticky coating. Slippery and rapid pulse/ Disperse wind, clear heat, eliminate damp. Bai Hui Jia Gui Zhi Tang + Xuang Bi Tang. GB20,31, BL12, GV16,14, TB5, SP10, LI4.
Wind-Damp-Heat-Bi
Swelling, rigidity, deformity and restricted movement of the joints (permanent). Pain in fixed joint is intermittent or changes from time to time. Worse in early morning, at night and cloudy, rainy and damp days. Could be better after movement. Could combine with wind-cold-damp Bi or wind-dampt-heat Bi. Purple tongue with white coat, thready and choppy pulse. Eliminate Phlegm, remove blood stasis. Xiao Huo Luo Dan. ST28, 3 6, SP6, 9, LI4, 11, GV14.
Stagnation of Phlegm and Blood.
Wandering or fixed pain in joint and/or muscles that is aggravated by overstrain or stress, alleviated by rest. Severity of pain changes from time to time. Could combine with other Bis. Sore and weak lumbar and knees, lower fever, emaciation or listlessness, SOB, pale or sallow complexion. Red/pink tongue with scanty or thin coat. Thready, rapid or slow pulse. Tonify Liver and Kidney. Du Huo Ji Sheneg. St36, BL17,18,20, SP6, KD3, BL18, 23.
Liver and Kidney Xu
Wandering pain in joints, limitation of movement, chilliness and fever, thin white tongue coating, superficial and tight or moderate pulse. Fang Fang Teng. GB3, 20, BL12, GV16, TB5, SP10.
Wind Bi
Sever pain in joints alleviated by warmth, aggravated by cold, fixed location but no local redness and hotness. Limitation of movement. Coldness of limbs, lack of perspiration. Thin and white tongue coating with pale tongue. Wiry and tight pulse. Wu Tou Tang. BL23, GV3, 4, CV4,6.
Cold Bi
Numbness and heavy sensation of the limbs, soreness or fixed pain or swelling of joints, aggravated on cloudy and rainy days. White, thick, sticky and wet tongue coat. Soft or slippery pulse. Yi Yi Ren Teng. ST28, 36, SP6, 9.
Damp Bi
Pain and soreness at TMJ, alleviated by warmth, aggravated by opening the mouth, especially chewing food, in some cases, difficulty opening the mouth or have a clicking sound, could have temporal headaches.. Main symptoms are worse in the cold, cloudy and rainy weather or cold wet environment. No local redness and heat sensations. Could have general joint pain. Thin and white tongue coating. Wiry and tight pulse. Jun Bi Tang. TB5, GB20.
Wind-Cold-Damp Invasion

Pain and soreness at TMJ, alleviated by warmth, aggravated by opening the mouth, especially chewing food, in some cases, difficulty opening the mouth or have a clicking sound, could have temporal headaches.. Main symptoms worse when experiencing stress or emotional disturbances. May have a history of injury. Sligtly purple tongue or eccomosis. Thin and white coating. Bu Yang huan + Wu Tang. LV3, GB41.
Qi and Blood Stagnation
TMJ
Pain and soreness at TMJ, alleviated by warmth, aggravated by opening the mouth, especially chewing food, in some cases, difficulty opening the mouth or have a clicking sound, could have temporal headaches.. Palpitation, dizziness, abdominal distension, poor appetite, loose stool, fatigue. Pale tongue with scallops, thin and white coating. Ba Zhen Tang. Bl17,18,20, SP10, ST36.

Pain and soreness at TMJ, alleviated by warmth, aggravated by opening the mouth, especially chewing food, in some cases, difficulty opening the mouth or have a clicking sound, could have temporal headaches.. Loose teeth, dizziness, blurred vision tinitus, soreness and weakness of lumbar region and knee joint, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep. Red tongue. Little coating. Deep and thready pulse. Da Bu Yin Wan. KD6,7,13, SP6, GB39, BL18, 23, GV4, CV4.
Liver and Kidney Xu
TMJ
Wandering pain in shoulder, which is aggravated by wind cold and alleviated by warmth. Slight restriction of joint mobility may be present. Aversion to wind cold, stiffness in neck. Pale tongue. Thin white coating. Superficial or wiry pulse. San Bi Tang. TB5, LU7.
Invasion of Wind Cold Damp
FROZEN SHOULDER
Fixed Sharp or stabbing pain which becomes worse during the night. May be swelling of shoulder. Limited movement of shoulder. Purple tongue. Thin white or yellow coating./ Wiry or thready and choppy pulse. Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang. Prick, bleed, cup.
Qi and Blood Stagnation
FROZEN SHOULDER
Soreness and pain in the shoulder which is aggravated by overstrain. Limited movement of shoulder. May have muscular atrophy. SOB, lassitude, dizziness, blurred vision, palpitation, tinnitus. Pale tongue with white coating. Thready or deep choppy pulse. Huang Qi Gui Zhi Wu Wo Tang. ST36, BL17, BL23.
