Q

Gutai *

A
  • Japanese radical art group post WWII… a reaction to the war. (Godzilla)
  • Influenced by Pollock… Gutai artists saw a film of Pollock painting on the ground. They thought that the act of him painting on the ground was art (not the canvas itself). Thought it was a performance.
  • It focuses on decay and destruction.
    > there is beauty in decay
    > we’re attracted to decay b/c we’re attracted to truth… decay is truth coming out.
    > From destruction there’s birth.

Q

Gutai Work

A
  • Believes that the canvas is the arena where material can perform… it is where the material and spirit meet… this is a recourse to indexical… from the process comes the composition.
  • Is opposite from medium specificity… instead on one medium it believes in using as much material as possible.
  • Much of the work is an attack on tradition.
  • Similar to Dada b/c of reaction to war but Dada is focused more on destructiveness for destructions sake…. Gutai is more productive… meant to free material
