Q

Describe the difference between manifest content (or dream content) and latent content (or dream thought).

A

The difference between manifest content (dream content) and latent content (dream content) is that:

  • Manifest Content: is what you see; it is the surface of the dream; the images that you actually see and hear.
  • Latent Content is the deeper meaning behind the content.

Q

What is the difference between condensation and displacement?

A

Types of dream work includes condensation and displacement.

  • Condensation is based on resemblance. It is when two things or people become one. For example, when you dreams your dentist is also your dad.
  • Displacement is also a metonym. It is when something stands in for another or stands in to represent something. For example, a cowboy hat represents your boyfriend b/c he wears a cowboy hat often…. or the crown stands in for the queen of England.

Q

Why were the Surrealists interested in Freud?

A

Surrealists were interested in Freud because Freud’s views of the conscious and unconscious mind. He states that the conscious is the surface and what we are aware of. The unconscious is what we are not aware of and is full of repressed feeling and thought. These repressions are all the vial and ugly things that we as human being want to hide and that are allowed to come out through hidden messages when we dream. Surrealist want to expose these repressions. They want to reveal that polite society is a fraud and disturb/shock the viewer to bring something out from the unconscious.

Q

Define filmic metaphor and metonymy relative to condensation and displacement.

A
  • Filmic metaphor is based on similarity, for example filming a man and a woman kissing on a train, then the film cuts to the train whistling. This implies that the kiss is steaming.
  • Filming Metonymy is based on proximity, for example a kidnapper follows a little girl with a balloon, then the film later cuts to the ballon tangled in the telephone wires. This implies that the girl was taken. The balloon represents the girl.
  • This related to condensation and displacement.
    • Condensation is like metaphor. 2 things become 1 - a kiss and a train whistle are both steamy.
    • Displacement is like metonymy. Both express something standing in for something else - the balloon stands in for the little girl.

Q

What technique does that film use to convey its meaning? Provide at least on specific example from the film.

A

An example is in the beginning of the film where the man expresses that he is going to cut the eye. It then cuts to the clouds crossing the moon. You would assume that this implies that the eye is being cut, but it still cuts to the man actually cutting the eye.
