Final 2 Flashcards
Behavioral responses are controlled by
The Somatic System which manages our conscious actions under our control
Personality Types (A-C, Hardy)
- Type A: ultracompetitive, controlling… Higher perceived stress level and problems coping
- Type B: Relaxed & contemplative. Less frustrated by daily events & more tolerant
- Type C: Suppression of anger, difficulty expressing emotions & feeling hopeless
- Hardy: Particular form of optimism, views stressors as challenges and opportunities for growth & learning
General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
Predictable response pattern to all stressors
- -Seyle recognized eustress/ Distress
- -Stages:
- Alarm: Fight-or-flight
- Resistance: Coping stage
- Exhaustion: Life threatening breakdown stage
Allostatic Load
The long-term negative impac of the stress response on the body, especially long-term exposure to stress hormones like cortisol
– High allo. load increases susceptibility to heart diseas, obesity, & reduced brain & immune function
Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI)
Study of the interactions among the nervous system, the endocrine system, and the immune system to stress responses
Cardiovascular Disease + Stress
- HR increases
- Blood vessels constrict
- Increase BP -> Atherosclerosis-> Blocked arteries
Insomnia
Trouble staying asleep or falling asleep
Sleep Apnea
Stops breathing while asleep
Depression
Mood disorder characterized by loss of interest in usual activities, sadness, hopelessness, loss of appetite, disturbed sleep, & other physical symptoms
Cardiovascular Disease
Disease of the heart & blood vessels
- -84 mil. Americans affected
- -leading cause of death
- -1 does every 37 seconds (2400 daily)
CVD Risk Factors
- Tobacco Use: A pack a day has 2x risk of Heart attacks
- High BP: Hypertension, systolic over diastolic (Normal 120/80)
- Unhealthy Cholesterol Levels: HDL’s(good) shuttles back to liver for recycling. LDL’s (bad) shuttles from liver to the organs & tissues that req. it
- Physical Inactivity: 40-60 mil Americans sedentary
- Obesity: Strain on heart by high BP & Cholesterol. Death 2-3x higher
- Diabetes: CVD caused by high blood glucose which damages artery lining
Atherosclerosis
Thickening of the arteries by deposits of fat, cholesterol, & other substances (plaque)
- -Caused by smoking, high BP, LDL deposits
- -Blockage in brain= stroke
- -Blockage in coronary arteries=Heart attack
Contributing Factors
- Psychological/ social
- Heredity
- Aging ( 75% 65
Major Forms of CVD
- Stroke
- Congestive Heart Failure
- Heart Disease & Heart Attacks
- Myocardial Infarction (MI)
- Coronary Thrombosis
- Angina Pectoris
- Arrhythmia
- Sudden death
Heart Attack
AKA Myocardial Infarction: when the coronary artery becomes blocked
