- p. 289. CREATING A SUMMARY REPORT. A SUMMARY FIELD is ABSTRACT by nature. You tell it which field to summarize and:
That’s about it.
You could have one that counts people, another one that totals orders, etc.
YOU THEN DESIGN YOUR LAYOUTS TO PRODUCE THE SPECIFIC GROUPINGS YOU WANT.
- For example, if you have a SUMMARY FIELD that TOTALS ORDERS , you can make that TOTAL ORDERS FIELD display:
TOTALS PER CUSTOMER on one layout, PER PRODUCT in another, and PER MONTH on a third.
- What is the benefit of the SUMMARY FIELD?
It gives you tremendous flexibility without the need to create different fields for the totals in each report.
- Let’s create a REPORT to show how a SUMMARY FIELD works. Choose LAYOUT–>
NEW LAYOUT/REPORT. Name it SUMMARY REPORT, and make it a BLANK LAYOUT. Click FINISH. How do you ensure that this report prints the same size ON ALL PRINTERS?
LAYOUT–>
LAYOUT SETUP:
In the dialog box that appears, choose the PRINTING TAB: Turn on USE FIXED PAGE MARGINS, and choose the margin sizes.
- What if, when formatting the report, you leave off the option to USE FIXED PAGE MARGINS?
Then FM will automatically print things as close to the edge of the page as the printer allows, so turn it on and leave one inch all around.
- Since the layout now has FIXED MARGINS, you may want to see them in LAYOUT MODE so you have a feel for how things fit on the page. How do you do this?
