Alliteration
The repetition of the same or similar sounds at the beginning of words.
Ex: “silver sails, satin slippers, creamy and crunchy, helpful hand.”
“Waves want to be wheels.”
Allusion
Reference to a famous person, place, event, or work of literature or art.
Ex: She felt like she had a golden ticket.
Imitative Harmony/Onomatopoeia
Words used to imitate sounds.
Ex: Bang, Boom…
Simile
Comparison of two things using the words “like” or “as,”.
Ex: “Her eyes were as sparkly as
diamonds.”
Metaphor
Direct comparison between two things. It does not use “like” or as,”.
Ex: “Her eyes were diamonds.”
Personification
Human qualities given to an animal, object, or idea.
Ex: “The sky is crying.”
Repetition
Repeating of a word, sounds, or phrases to add rhythm or to focus on an idea.
Ex: Time after Time
“And miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.”
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for emphasis or humour.
Ex: Tons of money, waiting for ages, a flood of tears.
Idiom
Common phrase made up of words that can’t be understood by their literal, or ordinary, meanings.
Ex: Cat got your tongue, frog in my throat.
Oxymoron
Contradiction of two words put together.
Ex: Jumbo shrimp, Plastic glasses.
Talk of your cold! Through the parkas fold it stabbed through like a driven nail.

Dumb as a dog he listened.

Idiom
A tutor who tooted a flute tried to tutor two tooters to toot.
