Fighting diseases Flashcards
How does the skin go against pathogens?
It acts as a barrier to pathogens. It secretes antimicrobial substances which kill the pathogens.
How does the nose go against pathogens?
The hairs and mucus inside the nose trap particles that could contain pathogens
How does the trachea and bronchi go against pathogens?
They secrete mucus to trap pathogens. They are lined with cilia(hair like structures),which waft the mucus up to the back of the throat where it can be swallowed.
What is the most important part to your immune system?
White blood cells because they travel throughout the body looking for microbes.
How do the white blood cells help to defend against pathogen?
Phagocytosis-when the white blood cell eat up the foreign cells and digest them.
Antibody production
Antitoxin production-These counteract toxins produced by the invading bacteria.
What happens during the antibody production?
When a white blood cell comes across a foreign antigen they will start to produce proteins called antibodies to lock onto the invading cells so that they can be found and destroyed by other white blood cells. The antibodies are specific to that type on antigen.
The antibodies are the produced rapidly and carried around the body to find similar bacteria or viruses.
What are antigens?
The unique molecules that all invading pathogens have on it surface.
What is the white blood cells that produce antibodies also known as ?
B-Iymphocytes
