Communicable disease Flashcards
What are pathogens?
microorganisms that enter the body and cause disease. They cause communicable diseases.
How can bacteria make you feel sick?
They produce toxins that damage your cells and tissues.
How can viruses make the cell damage, making you feel sick?
Viruses live inside your cells and replicate themselves using the cells’machinery to produce many copies of themselves. This would make the cell burst and release new viruses.
What are all protists?
eukaryotes and single-celled.
Where do parasites live and what do they cause?
on or inside other organisms and cause them damage.
What usually transfers parasites to the organisms?
A vector,which doesn’t get the disease themselves .
What are some fungi?
single-celled.But others have a body which is made up of hyphae(thread like structure)
What can the hyphae in some fungi cause?
Diseases,as they have the abilities to grow and penetrate human skin and the surface of plants.
They can produce spores ,which can spread to other plants and animals.
What are the top 3 different ways that pathogens can spread in?
Water-some pathogens can be picked up by drinking bathing in dirty water. For example chloera is a bacterial infection that’s spread by drinking water contaminated with the diarrhoea of other sufferers.
Air-they can be carried in the air and can be breathed in.Some airborne pathogens are carried in the air in droplets produced when you cough or sneeze. For example influenza that causes flu is spread in this way
Direct contact-Touching contaminated surfaces ,including the skin.
Pathogens can be spread by direct contact, can you give a example?
Athlete’s foot is a fungus which makes the skin itch and flake off.Commonly spread by touching the same thing as an infected person.
