Fight Or Flight Response Flashcards
What is the flight or fight response
a series of changes that prepare the body for physical action
What physiological changes occur due to fight or flight response
Increased heart rate, glucose, muscle tension, blood clotting
Why is the process of flight or fight performed
Due to evolutionary process to ensure our survival
Explain the process of flight or fight
The threat occurs and the part of the brain called the amygdala is mobilized.
Sends a message to the hypothalamus which communicates with the rest of the body through the sympathetic nervous system (SNS)
SNS prepares the body for action by sending a message to the adrenal medulla to produce adrenaline
Adrenaline increases heart rate, blood pressure, pupil size, oxygen and glucose to the brain suppressing non-essential systems moving blood away to essential areas
Once the threat has passed the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) restores the system back to normal
