16
Q

Name some uses of secondary data in our investigation

A

Historical maps from the 1940’s showing how many services there were
Pictures of different houses to complete the housing type survey

17
Q

What were the results of the environmental quality survey?

A

Slapton was more tranquil

18
Q

What were the results of the service tally survey?

A

Chillington has more services (increasing): 9-19
Slapton experienced a decline: 24-13

Slapton is more deprived

19
Q

Suggest some disadvantages to our epitome word survey

A

Some words are synonyms of others, so the total result of this word would be greater
- eg. Peaceful, Quiet, Tranquil for Slapton

Was not representative of the whole area
Some people wrote down more than one word
Timing may be an issue - residents/tourists

20
Q

Overall Conclusions for each hypothesis

A
  1. Slapton had the highest tranquility score, with more pleasant sights and fewer sounds
  2. Slapton was affected the most by service decline as there are fewer services than 1940. Services in Chillington had increased since 1940
  3. Many factors that affected people’s perceptions - not possible to determine the ‘better’ village
21
Q

Advantages for methods of presentation?

A

Easy to see which words were used most frequently
Easy to see based on colours which areas had highest tranquility
Easy to measure the decline/growth of services in a bar graph - good representation

22
Q

Disadvantages for methods of presentation?

A

Synonyms of words
More than one word
May be difficult to distinguish between shades of colour

23
Q

Advantages of Quantitative and Qualitative data?

A

Easy to compare using numbers - can measure decline or growth more easily

Offers a perspective of people’s thoughts in more detail

24
Q

Disadvantages of Quantitative and Qualitative data?

A

Subjective - based on people’s opinions - may not be entirely accurate

Can be subjective to misinterpretation of numbers
Incorrect statistics or inaccurate previous data can affect end result
