Field Sanitation - ATP 4-25.12 - Chapter 5 Flashcards
What is the role of the UFST when it comes to waste management?
Awareness training on the dangers associated with the handling of hazardous waste materials.
Monitoring of company- or unit-level waste management programs and facilities.
Training Soldiers on the appropriate use of personal protective equipment that must be used
during waste management operations.
Why are waste materials classified?
o To determine methods of disposal
o To prevent harm to people and the environment
o Identify items or component parts that are reusable
Where should waste collection points be located?
300 feet downslope and downwind from troop billeting and at least 100 feet from dining facilities, wells, surface water, and base
camp boundaries
Guidelines from what TM are followed when cleaning Receptacles, dumpsters, and compactors used by dining establishments?
Technical Bulletin Medical 530
How often should waste be removed from collection points?
At least twice per week
How often should waste be removed from food service facilities?
Daily
What are the primary means of disposal for nonhazardous solid waste in the field?
Burning, burial, or backhauling
In the absence of host-nation support, the preferred method of solid
waste disposal in the field is what?
Incineration (unless smoke and flames would compromise the tactical situation)
What is an open-air burn pit?
An area not containing a commercially manufactured incinerator or other equipment specifically designed and manufactured for burning of solid waste, must have more than 100 attached
or assigned personnel and be in place longer than 90 days.
How far should open-air pits be located from troop locations and living areas?
At least 450 feet
If burning or contract removal is not an option, what must be done with solid waste?
It must be buried
How far must burial sites be located from any natural water source used for cooking or drinking? and how far from kitchens (food consumption sites)
300 feet
100 feet
A pit that is 4 feet square and 4 feet deep is suitable for how many days?
One day for units of 100 Soldiers
What are the measurements of the trench when it is first dug out?
2 feet wide and 3-4 feet deep. The trench is extended as required.
What two categories is waste water organized as?
Gray water and black water
What is black water?
latrine wastewater containing human waste
What is gray water?
Wastewater from nonlatrine sources such as showers, laundry, kitchen operations, vehicle wash racks, and hand wash stations.
What are traditional expedient methods for disposal of gray water?
Soakage trenches, soakage pits, and evaporation beds
How is a standard soakage pit constructed?
Dig a pit that is 4 feet square and 4 feet deep
What special item must be used when a soakage pit is used for kitchens?
The soakage pit must contain a grease trap
OSHA states that shoring is required for pits deeper than?
Six feet
Where should soakage pits be located?
100 meters (feet???) down gradient from any water source
What is a grease trap?
A grease trap is trap constructed for the use of removing contaminants from gray water
What are the two types of grease traps?
The filter and the baffle.
