Field Education In SW Flashcards
History of social work
Despite new and ongoing challenges, social work education remains committed to the field practicum
History of field education
Tensions between the Academy, and the agency and debates about how best to integrate theoretical knowledge, and practice experience started with the beginning of professional education
-Mary Richmond pointed out that while mini learned from doing, learning by doing alone, is not efficient, and must be supplemented by theory
Apprenticeship approach
The apprenticeship approach, or experiential learning, puts the field practicum at the center of social work education
Academic approach
The academic approach is built on the premise that knowledge must be cognitively acquired before practice.
Articulated approach
In the apprenticeship approach, experiential know (doing) is privileged, and students understanding of practices comes through, inductive reasoning.
*** whereas in the academic approach, the theoretical knowledge(knowing) is privileged, and students understanding is achieved through deductive reasoning.
Structure of field education
In the Block placement, model of field, education, students complete all academic courses before entering the field, and then immerse themselves in experiential learning.
The concurrent model of field education site, two major advantages : the first is that greater potential for integrating classroom and field learning as a students move back-and-forth between the settings
Current issues
Roads and colleagues(1999) listed seven threats to field education in schools of social work: academization, loss of autonomy, evaluation of field directors, growth of programs, gatekeeping, changes in student population, and a lack of faculty commitment
