Who is fibromyalgia commonest in?
A
Young and middle aged women

Describe the onset of fibromyalgia?
A
Occurs as a primary condition OR in conjunction 25% RA and 50% SLE

What are the signs and symptoms of fibromyalgia?
A
- persistent (>3months) widespread pain (pain/tenderness on both sides of body, above and below waist, including axial spine)
- fatigue; disrupted and unrefreshing sleep
- cognitive difficulties
- unexplained symptoms, anxiety, depression, functional impairment of activities of daily living (ADLs)

What is it associated with?
A
depression, IBS and migraine

How is diagnosis made?
A
On a clinical basis, rule out;
- hypothyroidism
- RA
- SLE
- Polymyalgia rheumatica

How is is managed?
A
- Self-management techniques
- graded exercise and activity pacing
- atypical analgesia- tricyclics, gabapentin, pregabalin
- CBT
