Fibroadenoma Flashcards
Define:
Benign overgrowth of the collagenous mesenchyme of one of the breast lobules
Aetiology/risk factors:
Formed from a mixture of collagenous mesenchyme of one breast lobule
Epidemiology:
15-35 years most commonly
Symptoms:
Firm, smooth, rubbery and mobile lump
Painless
Can come in multiples
Signs:
Firm, smooth and mobile lump
Investigations:
Triple assessment
imaging will show round or oval, circumscribed lumps which may have course calcifications
Biopsy will show epithelial and stromal elements
Management:
Reassurance and observation
If unsure USS +/- FNA
If large/ causing pain/ patient prefers then surgical excision using excision biopsy
Complications:
Rare
Prognosis:
Benign and so usually treatment is not needed
1/3 regress, 1/3 stay the same, 1/3 get bigger
