Functions of protein?
- growth of body tissues/ cells in children
- repair of body tissues/ cells & maintenance of body tissues
- excess protein is used as a secondary energy source
Why do children require protein?
Due to children growing so fast, protein is required to help them grow properly and to repair their cuts and wounds
Why do teenagers require protein?
Protein is required to cope with the ‘growth spurt’ of teenagers, to repair damaged tissues and for maintenance of cells and tissues
Functions of fat in the diet?
- provides warmth
- very concentrated source of energy
- source of fat soluble vitamins ADE & K
- source of essential fatty acids
Carbohydrate functions?
- provides energy
- provide warmth as excess carbs can be converted into body fat for warmth
Why do toddlers/ children require carbohydrates?
They are very active- required for energy
Vitamin A functions?
- required for normal growth in children
- required for maintenance and health of skin
- Antioxidant vitamin helps prevent cancer
Vitamin A sources?
Carrots, milk, cheese, leafy greens
Functions of vitamin E?
- anti oxidant vitamin
- promotes healthy circulatory system
Vitamin E Sources?
- avocado, corn, eggs, rice
Functions of vitamin D?
- aids absorption of calcium
- aids development and maintenance of strong bones and healthy teeth
Sources of vitamin D?
Oily fish, sun, milk, egg yolk
