How will you define fever ?
Rectal temperature > 100.4 F (38 degrees C)
How will you diagnose fever by axillary temperature?
Axillary temperature> 99.5 F (37.5 degree C)
When will you hospitalize a child for fever if no infective locus is found?
Child < 1m
Child 1m -3 yrs with WBC < 5000 or > 15,000
Serious looking children
Treat with empiric antibiotics
Should you wrap a febrile child in wet cloth?
No, this can increase the risk of hypothermia, just undress the patient
How long should you treat a patient with antipyretics?
Not more than 3 days
Dose of paracetomol to treat fever
<1m- 10mg/kg/dose - 3 to 4 times daily as needed
>1m -15mg/kg/dose- 3-4 times daily as needed ( max 60 mg/kg/day)
Adults- 1g/dose- 3-4 times daily ( max 4g)
Dose of ibuprofen to treat fever
Children > 3m and < 40 kg- 10mg/kg/dose- 3 times daily ( max 1200 mg/day)
Children > 40 kgs and adults- 400 mg/ dose- 3 times daily
What antipyretic is to be given in pregnant and lactating women?
Paracetomol ONLY
Which drugs are contraindicated in hemorrhagic fever and dengue?
Ibuprofen and acetylsalicylic acid
