What are the signs that anemia may be immediately life threatening?
sweating, thirst, cold extremities , respiratory distress, shock
Treatment of iron deficiency anemia
elemental iron PO- 3m
<2 yrs- 30 mg per day
2-12 years- 60 mg per day
Adults :120-180 mg/ day in 2-3 divided doses
Dose of albendazole in children> 6m but < 10 kg
200 mg
Can you give albendazole in first trimester of pregnancy ?
No
Treatment of folate deficiency
folic acid PO- 4 months
<1 yr- 0.5mg/kg once daily
> 1 yr and adults- 5 mg once daily
How will you determine the volume of whole blood to be transfused ( in adults)?
(Hb required- Patient’s Hb) x 6 x body wt of pt
given over 3-4 hours
How many drops of whole blood make 1ml

How will you determine volume of blood to be transfused in children?
Children< 1 yr- 15ml/kg
Children > 1 yr- 20 ml/kg
malnourished children- 10ml/kg
Given over 3-4 hrs
During a blood transfusion the patient shows signs of hypervolaemia. How do you treat?
Inj Furosemide slow, direct iv
1mg/kg not exceeding 20mg
