- Governed by religious people
- Angels are organized in groups (celestial hierarchy)

- Respected military and social rank in middle ages
- Medieval writers used milites as a way to call knights
- Knight originated from the Old English word “cnite”
- Milites has been used sense Roman Empire
- A.D 400’s - 1400’s

Serf
A
- Type of rural farmer in the early middle ages (600’s - 1100’s)
- Developed in western Europe in 500’s
- Slave system collapsed so owners gave them more freedom
- Serfs were able to have houses, land, and large estates
- paid landlords for their rent
- Couldn’t be priests or give testimonies in court
- Could not be bought like slaves
- many serfs rebelled before serfdom ended in 1500’s
- Serfdom continued into the 1400’s in Germany
- some became wealthy
- Serfdom in Germany and Russia started in 1300’s and ended in 1800’s

Manorialism
A
- social and economic system
- land divided into into large estates or manors, and controlled my landlords and tenants
- Developed after Roman Empire fell in the late A.D 400’s
- Didn’t form the basis for a social system even though they had manors
- Lords manor was used for lords
- Tenants lived with other laborers in a cluster nearby the lords manor
- Tenants provided labor for protection and justice, paid rent and taxes for the lords goods, services, or money
- Manors began to break up in wester Europe in 1000’s when trade and industry started to grow
