forms the roof of the mouth, hard palate is anterior portion and soft palate is posterior

prevents food and liquid from entering the trachea

food passage to the stomach, muscular wall
Stomach
location:
function: mechanical and chemical digestion of food, contains rugae
Small intestine
location: light colored, small coils, loosely formed. left side of cavity.
function: chemical digestion and nutrient absorption, contains villi that increase surface area
Large intestine
location: dark colored, larger/longer, tightly formed coils that stay together. lower right side of cavity.
function: water absorption and fecal packing
Pancreas
location: under the stomach, small reddish thing in diagram
function: secretion of digestive juices and insulin
Gall bladder
location: greenish sac, looks like a spot on the underside of liver
function: holds bile for enzymatic digestion
Rectum
passage between intestine and anus
Liver
location: 4 lobes, large, toward top of abdominal cavity just under diaphragm
function: makes bile, stores carbs, metabolizes fats and other compounds
Spleen
location: right side of cavity by stomach, dark colored
function: maintenance of blood
Heart
4 chambers (like us!), circulation of blood
Ventricles
pumping chambers of heart
Atria
collection points for blood
Muscular diaphragm
separates thoracic from abdominal cavities, aids in lung expansion
Lungs
location: on left & right sides surrounding the heart
function: site of gas exchange
Kidneys
location: 2, one on each side. shaped like kidney bean, light colored, connected to ureters which lead to the urethra
function: elimination of waste, regulation of internal environment, filter blood
Uterine horns
provides space for multiple embryos to develop (litter)–small uterine body
Urinary bladder
location:
function: urine storage
Spermatic cord
includes vas deferens
Larynx
at top of trachea, knob shaped
Thymus gland
looks like fatty tissue, surrounds the trachea
Thyroid gland
located on the trachea, heart/nut shaped
