Definition of abortion
Unexpected, unplanned, spontaneous loss of pregnancy before fetus is sufficiently developed to survive extrautero
May occur up to 20 weeks
Intrauterine fetal demise
Fetal death after 20 weeks but before onset of labor
Threatened abortion
Vaginal bleeding before 20th week and cervical os is closed
Inevitable abortion
Vaginal bleeding with the cervix open to some degree
Frequently have associated cramping
Incomplete abortion
Bleeding, open os, passage of some products of conception
Complete abortion
Bleeding, closed os, passage of all the products of conception
Missed abortion
Fetus has died and is retained in uterus
No bleeding and usually no symptoms
Septic abortion
Any spontaneous or therapeutic abortion with intrauterine infection
Recurrent abortion
Three successive abortions
Most common cause of spontaneous abortion
Significant genetic abnormality
