Preparation for Shabbat

A

A

Reflect on the previous year and set things straight with other people and God, People go and apologise to those they’ve wronged. Take place over two days. Throw bread crumbs into water to symbolise throwing away bad habits.

Shabbat in the synagogue

A

The congregation stands when the ark is opened. Torah is taken from the ark, covered in a crown and a belt. Torah is held in front of the congregation while everyone chants verses and parades around the synagogue the Jews touch it with their prayer book or tassels of their tallit and then touch their lips.

chance to confess their sins. Then the doors of the ark are closed,

God sent 10 plagues as a
punishment for Pharaoh’s refusal to let the slaves leave Egypt. It was the last plague that changed his mind. The Hebrew slaves were protected from the death of their firstborn by putting the blood of a sacrificed lamb on their doorposts. As a result the
‘angel of death’ passed over their homes and their children were safe.
