Fermentation/Aerobic respiration/ ATP energy carrier molecule/photosynthesis Flashcards
What is fermentation?
an ATP production energy released by breaking down glucose without oxygen
what process does fermentation begin with?
glycolysis
if a small amount of energy is released what does this result in?
a small amount of ATP
what remains in the cytoplasm where it is converted into waste products?
pyruvate produced by glycolysis
what are the 2 types of fermentation?
alcohol fermentation, lactic acid fermentation
what is the word equation for alcohol fermentation?
glucose - ethanol + carbon dioxide + 2ATP
where does lactic acid fermentation happen?
animal cells
when does lactic acid fermentation happen?
when there is not enough oxygen to carry out aerobic respiration
what is the lactic acid word equation?
glucose - lactic acid + 2ATP
where does aerobic respiration take place?
the mitochondria and the cytoplasm
what is aerobic respiration carried by?
ATP
what does aerobic respiration require?
glucose and oxygen
what does aerobic respiration do?
breaks down glucose with oxygen through ATP
what are the two waste products of aerobic respiration?
carbon dioxide and water
what is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen - carbon dioxide + water +32ATP
where is ATP energy stored?
in a high-energy phosphate bond
what does ATP energy power? (give examples)
muscle contractions, nerve signalling and biosynthesis
where is ATP produced?
in the mitochondria
when is ATP produced?
during cellular respiration
what 2 components are combined in chloroplasts which contain the chlorophyll in photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide and water
in what form is sunlight converted into chemical energy?
in the form of glucose
what is the photosynthesis word equation?
carbon dioxide + water - glucose + oxygen
