All the parts of a cell membrane and the functions they perform Flashcards
what is the phospholipid bilayer made out of?
2 layers of fat
what is the setup of the phospholipid bilayer?
lets small things like oxygen pass through bu keeps big molecules away
What do integral proteins do?
go all the way through the membrane
what do integral proteins help with?
help with the transport of things in and out or acts as receptors for signals
what do peripheral proteins do?
stick to the outside and help with structures & communication
where is cholesterol found and what does it do?
inside the membrane to keep flexible
what does cholesterol stop?
stops the membrane from getting to stiff when its cold, or loose when its hot
What does glycolipids contain?
a mix of fats and sugars that help cells recognise each other and communicate
what does glycolipids help with?
helps cells stick together and stay in place
what is in glycoproteins?
a mix of proteins and sugars
what do glycoproteins help with?
helps the immune system know which cells belong to the body and which don’t
what is the function of transport proteins?
to let specific molecules move freely
transport proteins change…
shape to help substances move in or out
do transport use energy?
some use energy some don’t
what do receptor proteins act like?
antennas that pick up signals from outside the cell
what do recepetor proteins help with?
help the cell respond to hormones, and other signals
