Femoral Triangle Flashcards
What are the boundaries of the Femoral Triangle?
Superior - Inguinal ligament (forms base)
Medial - Lateral border of adducter longus muscle
Lateral boundary - medial border of sartorius muscle
Apex of triangle - where medial border of sartorius muscle crosses lateral border of adductor longus muscle.
What forms the floor of the Femoral Triangle?
iliacus muscle, psoas major muscle, and medial part of pectineus muscle.
what two muscles pass deep to the inguinal ligament to attach onto the lesser trochanter of the femur?
Iliacus M and Psoas Major M. collectively known as iliopsoas after the inguinal ligament.
What is the action of the Iliacus and Psoas major (iliopsoas) muscle?
Flex the hip or thigh.
What forms the roof of the femoral triangle (from deep to superficial).
- Fascia lata
- cribiform fascai
- subcutaneous tissue
- skin
What space is deep to the inguinal ligament? What are it’s components?
- Retroinguinal space.
- NAVeL (Lateral to Medial) -> Femoral Nerve, Femoral Artery, Femoral Vein. and Lymphatics. + Iliopsoas M (most lateral, along with Nerve make up muscular compartment).
What seven muscles does the Femoral N. innervate?
- Iliacus M.
- Vastus Medialis M.
- Vastus Intermedius M.
- Vastus Lateralis M.
- Rectus Femoris M.
- Sartorius M.
- Pectineus M.
What is the cutaneous distribution of the Femoral Nerve?
Anterior thigh and part of the medial thigh.
What is the cutaneous distribution of the saphenous nerve?
medial aspect of the lower leg and ankle.
Femoral vessels are enclosed by what, which is found deep to the fascia lata
Femoral Sheath.
When doing a Cardiac Catheterization, the doctor enters begins where?
Femoral Artery
What is the superior opening of the femoral canal called? What is contained in the femoral canal?

lateral thigh
What does the external pudendal branch of the femoral artery supply?
external genitalia and anal canal
What does the medial femoral circumflex branch of the femoral artery supply?
Head and neck of the femur
What does the lateral femoral circumflex branch of the femoral artery supply?
Lateral thigh muscles
What does the profunda femoris (perforating) branches of the deep femoral artery supply?
Hip join plus three muscular compartments of the thigh.
Blood supply of the femoral head is provided by what? Where does it branch from?
Posterior retinacular arteries.
Medial femoral circumflex branch of the femoral artery
What is the largest vein in the entire body?
Great Saphenous Vein
