Femoral Triangle Flashcards
What makes up the roof of the femoral triangle?
Fascia Lata
What makes up the borders of the femoral triangle?
Lateral: Sartorius m.
Medial: Adductor longus m.
Base: Inguinal L.
What are the contents of the femoral triangle?
NAVEL towards your navel (from lateral to medial) Femoral nerve Femoral artery Femoral vein Empty space with lymph
Describe a femoral hernia: Location and what goes where
Femoral canal
Loop of small intestine protrudes into it
More common in females
Appears as mass in femoral triangle, inferior to pubic tubercle
Compresses contents of femoral canal
Strangulation of hernia can lead to necrosis of intestine
What are the three compartments of the femoral sheath and what do they contain?
Lateral: Femoral A.
Intermediate: Femoral V.
Medial/Femoral Canal: Contains empty space and loose CT and fat (Extends to femoral ring)
What is special about the femoral sheath? Two things
IT DOES NOT CONTAIN THE FEMORAL N.
The femoral canal (medial part of femoral sheath) has empty space to allow vein to expand during increases in BP
What are the main branches of the femoral artery?
Profunda femoris a. (which branches into the medial and lateral circumflex femoral as.) and Deep femoral a.
What muscles does the profunda femoris branch of the femoral artery supply?***
Profunda femoris branches into medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries
Lateral circumflex femoral artery (ascending, transverse, descending branch):
Supplies lateral thigh muscles and femur hear
Medial circumflex femoral artery
Supplies femoral head and neck
What muscles are supplied by the deep femoral A? ***
Supplies ADductors and hamstring muscles
Where would you palpate the femoral artery? What is palpation of the femoral artery used for?
Inferior to inguinal ligament and midway between ASIS and pubic tubercle
Radiographic imaging of left heart and coronary vescicles
Why does compression of the femoral a. occur?
What structures does the femoral a. press against when compressed?
Femoral a. is in front of the head of the femur.
Superior pubic ramus, psoas major
Where does Femoral artery cannulation occur (specifically) and what is it used for?
Inferior to inguinal ligament
Left cardio angiography/coronary arteriograph
BGA
Laceration of femoral artery
Why does it occur (anatomically speaking)?
What can occur as a result?
Femoral artery is very superficial
Cruciate anastamosis and/or arteriovenous shunt (femoral artery retracting back (superiorly))
What is the cruciate anastamosis?
Medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries w/ inferior gluteal artery and first perforating artery (inferiorly) when ligation of femoral artery occurs
Basically resupplying things normally supplied by the now destroyed or damaged femoral artery
Saphenous Varix
What is it?
What does it cause?
Dilation of great saphenous vein
Causes edema in femoral triangle
Consider when pt has varicose veins in lower limb
How do you identify the location of the femoral vein
Medial to the femoral artery (which you can feel the pulse there)
In thin people, it may be mistaken for the great saphenous vein
Cannulation of the femoral vein
Used for?
Blood samples for pressure recordings on chambers of rt. heart
Right cardiac angiography
Administration of IV fluids
