male-dominated cultures imposed monotheism to justify patriarchal behaviour. ancient civilisations had different attitudes to beliefs

- made it okay for females to hurt themselves today as she was made a saint for hurting herself

segregate sexes- women participation is restricted eg cannot read sacred texts

Foucault-> Religion exert power by controlling the human body eg diet, dress (hijab). rules of consummating marriage. women are subjected to more than men

women in subservient role eg carer, servicing family member at expense of career.
