What is the hidden curriculum? heaton and lawson
a form of socialisation within the classroom that teachers students their expectations based on class, ethnicity and gender
What are ways the hidden curriculum reinforces gender inequalities? Heaton and Lawson
books-female characters depend on men…kelly:women aren’t present in science texts
students-Culley:male students occupy space making girls uncomfortable e.g computers
teachers expectatations/attitudes -e.g asking boys to lift chairs
patriarchial curriculum-some subjects are very gender specific
lack of positive role models-most SLT are men
what are some evaluations for Heaton and Lawson?
-issue of gendered spaces is still relevant today…as innitiatives i.e WISE have grown
-men still occupy SLT positions in schools
-textbooks feature more male academics however childrens books are providing more female role models
x-girls still outperform which would suggest that boys face more inequalities in school
e.g Haanan (2000)-girls are socialised in a way that prepares them for schooling
What did Sue Sharpe research?
-the attitudes of working class girls
-compared 2 samples form the 1970s and 1990s
-1976 survey sharpe found girls prioritised love, marriage, children
1994 girls prioritised jobs and being able to support themselves
what are some evaluations for sue sharpe?
-these changes have been verified by other reseachers such as Francis
What did Francis claim?
-girls are still underachieving in school due to disruptions from boys despite boys doing worse
how did Francis conduct her research?
-observed classroom interactions and student behaviour
-schools were all mixed sex comprehensive with most students being WC
-observed english and maths lessons both polarising fem and masc subjects
What were Francis’ conclusions?
-boys gain status by taking up ‘class clown’ roles
-boys dominate classroom interaction by being louder than girls, taking up space, and teachers attention
-girls choices were just as ambitious as boys
-suggests girls work harder in the classroom to combat the inequalities they expect to face
what were some evaluations for francis?
x-was unable to faithfully record classroom interactions due to high noise levels
What did Osler argue?
-focus on boys underachievement undermines the growing rate of underachievement and exclusion among girls
-afro-carribean girls are more vulnerable to exclusion than white females
-girls that are excluded have a more difficult time accesing support and are denied education
What are some evaluations for Osler?
-reveals the problem with schools focusing on whatever group they percieve as most disadvantaged
-shows how class, gender and ethnicity intersect and complicates the experiences of girls in school
