What is the labia?
Protective flaps of skin on either side of vaginal opening; majora (homologous to male scrotum) and minora (homologous to male urethra and penile tissue)
What is the clitoris?
Packed with sensory nerves; homologous to male penis
What is a vagina?
Connects the uterus with outside world - site of sperm deposition, birth canal, protection from bacterial invasion (highly acidic)
What parts make up the vulva?
- Labia
- Clitoris
- Vagina
What is the cervix?
(Cervical canal) – muscular band that prevents fetus from delivering prematurely -
dilates during birth
What is the uterus?
(Womb) – pear shaped, where fertilized ovum embeds in endometrium (uterine lining)
What is an ovary?
Store and produce ova, generally one mature ovum is produced monthly (alternating ovaries)
What is the oviduct?
(Fallopian tube) – tube carrying mature ova
to uterus - usually site of fertilization; Ova swept in by fimbria at open ends
What are the female gonads?
Ovaries
What is female puberty?
(Point where reproduction is possible) - females must be able to ovulate (release eggs)
Girls are born with all of their 1 oocytes, what phase of meiosis are they in?
Prophase 1
What phase of meiosis II does ovulation occur?
Metaphase II
What phases of meiosis II does only a fertilized egg go through?
Anaphase II and telophase II
