Female Reproductive System & Function Flashcards
Labia Majora
EXTERNAL
outer fold of flesh
help protect the vagina and urethra.
Labia Minora
EXTERNAL
inner fold of flesh
help protect the vagina and urethra
Clitoris
EXTERNAL
A small sensitive bump located above the urinary opening, which may provide pleasure & orgasm to females when stimulated.
Vaginal Opening
leads to the Vagina.
the — and —- are not part of the reproductive system.
Anus & Urethra
Hymen
EXTERNAL
a thin layer of webbed tissue across the vaginal opening
every hymen is different
usually there is enough space to allow menstrual blood flow
not an indication of a woman’s virginity!
can “break” from riding a bicycle, a pelvic exam, wearing a tampon, etc.
Ovaries
INTERNAL
Two egg-shaped organs the size of an almond.
When a female is born, the ovaries already contain all the eggs they will ever produce.
There are up to 400,000 eggs in the ovaries when a person hits puberty, but only 500 will ever be released!
Ovulation
the release of one egg every month or so from the ovary.
Fimbriae
INTERNAL
Fimbriae are finger-like projections on the ends of the fallopian tubes
Each month, fimbriae catch the egg that one of your ovaries releases then sweep the egg (ovum) into the fallopian tube.
Fallopian Tubes
INTERNAL
Narrow tube receives the egg from the ovary.
If the egg is fertilized by a sperm, it takes about 3 days to travel through the tube to the uterus.
If a sperm does not fertilize the egg, it will dissolve in the fallopian tube.
Uterus
INTERNAL
A pear shaped organ about the size of a fist
It is very strong, muscular and stretchable.
Each month, the uterine lining thickens to prepare for growth of a baby.
During pregnancy the uterus grows with the baby, and holds the placenta and amniotic fluid.
Cervix
INTERNAL
A very small opening at the bottom of the uterus.
Allow sperm to travel from the vagina into the uterus.
During childbirth, the cervix can expand to let the baby through.

Female Anatomy: Function
To produce and store eggs in the ovaries.
An egg is released once a month after puberty begins.
Each egg contains genetic information (23 chromosomes)
To protect and nourish the fertilized egg in the uterus until it is fully developed (approx. 9 months) = Pregnancy
