Female Reproductive System Flashcards
Thin walled tube lying between the bladder and rectum
Provides a passageway for birth, menstrual flow, and is the organ for sexual intercourse
Vagina
Hollow, thick-walled organ located in the pelvis anterior to the rectum and postero-superior to the bladder
Uterus
3 parts of uterus
1) Body
2) Fundus
3) Cervix
Major portion of the uterus
Body
Rounded region superior to the entrance of uterine tubes
Fundus
Distal tip
Contacts the vagina
Cervix
Receives the ovulated oocyte and provide a site for fertilization at the distal quarter of the tube
Fallopian tube
Fingerlike projections at the ampulla
Fimbriae
3 layers of uterine wall/uterus:
1) Perimetrium
2) Myometrium
3) Endometirum
Outermost serous layer; the visceral peritoneum
Perimetrium
Middle layer; interlacing layers of smooth muscle
Myometrium
Mucosal lining of the uterine cavity changes in thickness during the menstrual cycle
Endometrium
Components of FRS:
1) egg-producing ovaries
2) oviducts (fallopian tubes), which conduct the egg to the uterus
3) uterus; development of embryo occurs
4) cervix&vagina provide openings for sperm
Composed of millions of follicles that contain oocytes for production of eggs
Important for production of estrogen and progesterone
Ovaries
These glands secrete mucus which lubricates the vestibule and the vagina during intercourse
Bartholin’s Glands
