What is the female version of the blood-testis barrier? What is it’s structure and purpose?
Blood-follicle barrier; consists of vascular endothelium, basement membrane, and membrana granulosa; protects the developing follicle from toxins, immune reactions, etc.
Where is germinal epithelium found in the ovary? What type of epithelium is it?
Found on the surface of the ovary– single layer of cuboidal epithelium
What layer separates germinal epithelium and the cortex of the ovary?
Tunica albuginea
What part of the ovary contains developing follicles?
The ovarian cortex
What is the first stage of follicular development? At what point of fetal life do they appear?
Primordial follicles; 3rd month of fetal life
What are the stages of follicular development
Primordial follicle–> primary follicle–> secondary follicle–> Mature/Graafian follicle

What are atretic follicles?
Follicles stimulated to develop but not released for ovulation– they will degrade
How can cervical mucus affect fertility?
Can be really thick, creating a physical barrier, or can contain toxic or spermicidal compounds
What are the different types of Ovarian cysts?
Graafian follicle cysts, corpus luteum cysts, hemorrhagic cysts
What are the potential complications of ovarian cysts?
Ovarian torsion, rupture
What does the corpus luteum become if there is no fertilization?
Corpus albicans
